Gee, I Wonder Who's Going To Mexico...

Oh wait, that'd be me!! Yup, in two and a half weeks yours truly will be headed to Cancun for five days of total relaxation. I bought my ticket yesterday afternoon and cannot wait until I've left all this stress behind (though it'll be hard ignoring my hotel's wireless service).

This will be the first time I travel out of the country by myself, but I feel like I need to do this. In fact, I've been feeling this way for many months now. It's half me wanting to run away from everything that's been bringing me down and half me needing to prove to myself that I can jet set and manage in foreign territory on my own. Yeah, there's the chance that I'll get depressed alone out there, but I could also use this opportunity to center myself once again.

Back in April, my coworker introduced me to these Zencasts that were absolutely wonderful. I'd walk through Central Park and play it on my iPod. I wrote down the following quote from one of those podcasts:

"If you're always moving and acting and doing, you don't really have to confront yourself and meet yourself. But if you really sit still sometimes, suddenly all this energy doesn't have an outlet in a sense. And so you get to see it."

So I guess what I've been needing is stillness (which is quite hard to manage in this city). I've been feeling so lost and this constant moving and keeping busy (so I don't have to stop and think) is exhausting me even more. So maybe I can meet myself again in Mexico and figure out where I want to be.

Plus, I have this fantasy of going to a fancy restaurant dressed to the nines and feeling completely at ease as I request a table for one ;)

  1. That's so cool!
Have an amazing time!! I went to Cancun on a cruise once and the water was to die for. Absolutely beautiful!!

  2. ahh I'm so jealous!
take lot's of pics, ahh lucky!!
    I wanna go too!!!! :(

  3. Guess what? I've never been to Mexico, but you've been chosen as a winner (handpicked by my girls. LOL)! Are you dancing? :)

  4. SOOOO jealous! I hope you have a wonderful time!

  5. That picture looks so much better than the view outside of my office.

Take lots of pictures of that blue sky and ocean!

  6. kelsey, I cannot wait to lay out on the beach and forget about everything else for a while.

franco, Trust me, tons of pics will be taken!

maki, Yay!! Can't wait for their artwork! And yes, I am in fact dancing (but on the inside...I'm at work!)

merc, Thanks! I've been needing a vacation for a whiiiiile. Can't believe I'm actually going on one.

sugar, Is it cold where you are? Because it is freezing here. I'm looking forward to some warmth :)

  7. Ooooooooooooh I would LOVE to get away and go to Cancun alone!! Too bad I have 3 kids and a hubby to hinder that fantasy! lol

Don't focus on the fact that you are going to be alone. I think it is awesome and empowering. You will have a great time! Don't forget to grab some sand and bring it back with you! It's a great (FREE) momento of your trip!!

  8. Hi, i live...therefore i consume! (Great name, btw) Yeah, I agree: it is so empowering to see a woman just doing her thing regardless of whether she's accompanied or not. And great idea about the sand! Thanks so much :)

  9. Ah, so awesome that you're going to Mexico!!! And good for you, for taking a break and just getting away from it all for a while, vacations are always rejunvinating, I think! :)

10.! I think the alone time in a place like that could do nothing but empower! Fantastic thing to do for yourself!

    Enjoy the trip!

  11. Have fun rata. Be safe and bring me back a Mexican man.

    : )

  12. how awesome! you deserve it.

  13. I've been to Cancun twice, and I AM SO JEALOUS. SO JEALOUS. You will have a wonderful time - treat yourself good! :)

  14. How fabulous!! Good for you! I hope you have a great time!! Drink lots for me....well not too much. ;)

  15. Ooh, I'm jealous! I've been wanting to go to Mexico lately! Sounds great. Don't worry about going alone--I know a girl who went to Cuba by herself, and she said it was fine. I was going to go on a European cruise by myself, but that seemed to push my (now) husband (previously boyfriend of 7 years!) to propose, so we made it our honeymoon. So no alone vacation for me. But I would have!

  16. I went and did the exact same thing in September! I don't think we'd 'met' then, but I think the post is called 'letters from heaven'--yours sounds way more glam, though. I am definitely green with envy. The best part being: it was exactly what I needed, even though I didn't know what I needed at the time.

  17. s-c, yeah, I could def use some rejuvenation. Maybe I'll come back looking like I'm 12?

inspired heart, i'm hoping it will! I could use some power of any sort right now.

anonymous, I hope you like them tiny because I'm only taking a carry-on.

valerie, thanks for the heads up. I like how that's the default warning for trips to Mexico. I'll try not to pull a Charlotte ;)

lisa, yes I sooo do! After three years of working hard with school, job searching and then work, it's about time.

tooj, you've been there twice?! I'm jealous of YOU! And yeah, I need to start treating myself better asap...this trip's a beginning.

heidi, no worries, I won't be drinking myself into complete oblivion. I don't want to waste a day nursing a hangover.

lainey, oh wow, Cuba? Great for her. And I think everyone should travel alone at some point or another. I did travel to France in 2002 with a group of complete strangers from around the country to study French for a month. But I made friends really quickly so that doesn't count.

And lucky you and that proposal! ;)

snotty, Ooh you did? I'm heading over to read that post now....

Ok, I'm back. Wow, that must have been some experience. I went through a phase where I thought "Hmmm, maybe heading off to a meditation retreat will be helpful" (that was obviously after I read Eat, Pray, Love). But I couldn't sit through one session of meditation because my ADD'ish self can't sit still for more than five minutes so imagine doing that day after day. Note to self: seriously work on that.

  18. I have traveled by myself before. I was just like you, totally unsure if I was going to like it or be totally miserable. Verdict was: LOVED IT! It is really refreshing to be totally selfish for a few days. If you decide you want to do something, you don't have to worry about if other people want to or not. If you start something and 15 minutes in decide it sucks, you can just turn around and leave - no pretending to like it so that you don't keep the other person from having a good time.

My only recommendation is be prepared for some looks when you say "Table for one" - not bad looks, just curious looks. And bring something to read or do during dinner. People watching is fun, but it can only last for so long before you kind of feel creepy. :) Mealtimes were the only times it was a bit tough

My single overseas adventure was to Sweden (i ended up with 3 days there after a mixup from a business trip...). Hope you have a great time!!!

  19. emily, Yay, I'm glad to hear people keep giving the thumbs up to traveling alone. And that's EXACTLY what I'm talking about: complete and utter selfishness. No one to answer or cater to and no one to rain on your parade if you so choose to have one.

Yeah, dining alone is the only thing that has me squirming because I don't want to take the easy way out and just buy food to go and eat it in my room...lame!! We'll see what how that goes. I was going to people watch or pretend that whatever's on my plate is the most fascinating thing on earth so I don't have see who's looking at me. Hmmm, maybe I can eat in the kitchen...

Was Sweden fun? I haven't put that on my list of places to check out. And an impromptu trip to a foreign country sounds like a fun little adventure!

  20. Call me a weirdo, but eating alone is something that I have alwasy been comfortable with so don't worry much about that. You'll be fine.

  21. YAY! I traveled through Europe by myself when I was about your age (I think) and it was the best time of my life. You will do just great. It is something you will look back on when you're knee-deep in diapers and permission slips.

  22. You are going to have the most marvelous time! The beaches are beyond gorgeous..sitting in the sun, staring at the unreal blue water, sand between your toes. It is the most relaxing place on earth! And bringing back lots of pictures will help us feel like we got to come along!

  23. I envy you! I wish I could be that brave.

  24. I hope you have a fantastic time, and be sure to take a lot of pictures! Congrats on being saucy this week too:)

  25. Anonymous, muchos kudos to you. I'm always so self-conscious and feel like people will burn a hole through me with their eyes.

Suz, Ooh I've always toyed with that idea too, but am probably too scared about language barriers and winding up lost on some mountain with nothing but the clothes on my back and a goat (because obviously I'd travel by goat istead of train).

nikki, i can't wait for all that. and yes, tons of pictures will be taken and I'll post some up as soon as I get back to help you all get through those long days at work.

gabby, it's funny. I consider myself to be such a scaredy-cat about a lot of things, but with others I just jump off the ledge and just go for it. What's the worse that can happen. On second thought, lets not think about that :p

brenda jean, thanks so much for stopping by!

  26. Lucky you! I've been dying to go on vacation for years now! Dustin is promising to take me somewhere next year so we'll see.:)

  27. good for you! i'm so happy (and a little envious) that you get to do this by yourself. hope you have a wonderful, wonderful time in cancun! and no internet please :)

  28. blessings, good luck! Getting away every now and then is the greatest.

odessa, thanks! And I think I might go through withdrawal symptoms while I'm there. Not even kidding.

Say word.
