Spring Clean Your Make-Up Collection

Do you keep your favorite lip gloss for ages making sure you've used every last drop? Do you still have old polishes you refuse to throw out because the color still looks good as new? Yeah, well I'm guilty as charged, too.

It's hard parting with make-up (especially when it cost a pretty penny to score in the first place), but here's why you should: that stuff all expires. You don't want to risk getting an eye infection by using old mascara. In fact, that should be replaced every three months because it's the perfect home sweet home for some really nasty bacteria. Keep this list in mind to know what's still good and what to throw out!

  1. I dont wear make-up often so I grab samples when I can. That way I can toss them after the first couple uses. The only thing I dont toss is the the Blistex, but then I go through it so fast it doesnt usually have time to expire.

  2. Every 3 months? Oh my. I don't even want to admit how long I've had all my makeup.

  3. Thanks Dorkys!! I shall replaced my mascara asap.... even if I don't wear it everyday.

  4. Ick. You're right. I know that about mascara, but I refuse until it's all gone. Dang it. Now I'm going to go home and throw it away are so mean. ;) It's like a mom guilting a kid into throwing away a tattered shirt that we keep trying to hold onto....*big sigh*

  5. SO true. It's so very hard to give up make-up considering the cost. But a great reminder...and don't forget to wash brushes weekly. (I'll try to remember as well)

  6. ladystyx, oh that's a really good idea, but knowing me I figure I'll just go through it soooo quickly and will then have to buy another one. Years later...I still have it.

sugarlens, trust me. You're not alone and we just don't really think about what's in there. That and we forget to keep tabs on when we bought the product. But if it's coming into contact with our lips, our eyes, our face etc, then it's so important to know what's in there. Yuck at the thought!

anonymous, good! That stuff goes bad the quickest because of the oxygen and germs that gets pushed into the bottle each time we pump the brush in and out of the tube. Here's a trick: slowly pull out the brush while twisting it. This coats the bristles with the mascara and prevents the liquid from drying out too fast.

tooj, I had my last one since last summer. I finally threw it out last month when my eye start hurting a bit and I got freaked out. I just don't wear makeup that often so that stuff could very well stay there for a lifetime without running out.

nobody's girl, another great tip. Thanks for pointing that out!

  7. My Mary Kay lady does a make up trade in each year. You can trade in old make up for a discount on new stuff. It's the only way I give up my old stuff!

  8. Wow, I never knew that about mascara. But then, I'd have to actually USE some to probably make it worthwhile to know it expires.

  9. Ooh, I'm the worst with this. I know better, too! Thanks for the reminder ... I'm going to update my make up this week.

    Winks & Smiles,

Say word.
