Hellooo Sailors!

Fleet Week is upon us in NYC and after passing by some sailors this afternoon, I just might have to participate in some of the festivities. I'm pretty sure it's part of my civic duty.

  1. Well, if you want to meet a guy I think that you are in the right place this week! :)

  2. LOVE your name. Is it real? Now I will have to stay up all night reading your archives to see if there is any info on that. So happy I saw you on SITS:)

  3. joy, oh but the sailors are only around for such a short time before they leave. Such a tease.

parentingBYdummies, hi and welcome! Yeah it's real though I don't think I've ever explained it here. For the interested few, here's the backstory:

I was named after a friend of my mother's who was also Dominican. Though our name is spelled this way (lucky me) it's derived from Dorcas which appears in the New Testament of the Bible. (Side note: I've never actually read the whole thing and only just learned the meaning of my name several years ago. I could've saved myself a lot of grief if I had something to answer back to those bullies.)

Anywho, Dorcas was a dressmaker who lived in Joppa, was kind and cared for the orphans, widows and poor in the town. In turn, she was very loved. When she grew ill and died, everyone mourned her death and were very upset.

Peter was in a town nearby performing miracles and though he hadn't brought anyone back to life, Dorcas' friends summoned him to where her body was laid to rest. After he asked the mourners to leave the room, he prayed to God that he could bring her back from the dead. He told Dorcas (who also goes by Tabitha) to get up and she did.

I'm pretty sure she danced a little jig right after.

And that's the story! (And to this day my parents don't understand what part of my name means in English. Good stuff.)

  4. ah, sailors. my father is one (though he's retired now) and i hated it because he was away too much for too long. but hey, you can always use some eye candy, go for join the fun :)

  5. Now I know I'm dating myself here but, back in 86' I celebrated the bicentennial year fireworks at
Battery Park, oh and all the ships were in with tons of Popeye's!!! Lovely, handsome men invaded the streets of NY, walking around with those little white outfits all throughout the city, um! Unfortunately, I was with my boyfriend and alls I could do was stare dreamily at all that sweet candy floating all around me:)

Dorcas, I love that story and how amazing that your parents named you after her!

  6. Everytime I hear Fleet Week I think of the Sex and the City episode where the girls go to some of the festivities.

    Have a good time!!

  7. odessa, that must have been tough for all of you!

ms. wanda, yipes what torture. It's like telling a kid at a candy store he can't have anything. Oh and I'm pretty sure my parents had no clue about the Bible reference. My mom seriously just named me after her friend because she liked it.

kelley, me too, lol! Especially Carrie's line: "If Louis was right, and you only get one great love, then New York may just be mine...and I can't have nobody talkin' $#!t about my boyfriend."

  8. well hello sailors!

  9. Be careful! Those sailors will break your heart!!!! LOL!

  10. It always feels sooooo good to do your civic duty....

Hope you got your terminology straight... bow, astern, avast, ahoy and all that...

  11. It's so SATC. :) I love it!

  12. Mmmm, who can't resist a cute guy in uniform! You must perform your civic duty, definitely.

Say word.
